The Job

Staff Back-End Engineer

Job Description

As a Staff Back-End Engineer, you will play an integral role in Prisms’ continued success by taking ownership of our server ecosystem, enhancing system capabilities, performance, security, and stability.  Prisms is growing quickly in both domestic and international markets.  Your role will be to ensure that our servers and data storage capabilities will support this growth.  You will be working with Prisms management to forecast future needs and suggest technological solutions.  You will also work with internal teams to support the data needs of the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain our server and database ecosystem, expanding across multiple regions.
  • Architect, implement, and maintain back-end systems and databases to manage complex datasets and user interactions efficiently.
  • Develop and maintain interfaces with various Student Information Systems (SIS), to facilitate class rostering and performance reporting.
  • Provide content management, computing, and data resources needed by other Prisms teams.
  • Actively participate in the entire lifecycle of application development including system design, coding, testing, deployment, documentation, and support.
  • Conduct thorough code reviews and maintain high code quality standards. Ensure practices such as test-driven development are adhered to.
  • Work in close collaboration with product leaders, front-end engineers, and data scientists.
  • Monitor performance and optimize back-end systems to ensure reliability and scalability.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies that can enhance product effectiveness, recommending relevant adoptions and integrations.

Requirements

  • Passionate about reinventing STEM education and making a significant impact through your work.
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. Advanced degrees are highly regarded.
  • Solid understanding of cloud services (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud), including security models, networking, redundant server architectures, deployment strategies, and server monitoring.
  • Strong knowledge of data structures, data algorithms, and proficiency with both relational and no-sql databases.
  • Proven experience in back-end development, with expertise in Node.js, python, and SQL.
  • Expert knowledge of RESTful services, API development, and authentication strategies.
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, and testing.
  • Strong analytical thinking, innovative problem-solving abilities, and excellent time management skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of conveying technical details to a diverse audience of product leaders.
  • Prior experience with educational technology, VR, or related sectors is a definite plus.
