WestEd Study: Virtual Reality as a Catalyst for Mathematics Learning

At Prisms, our mission has always been to blaze a new trail for intuitive, authentic and engaging Math learning experiences. The Phase II randomized control trial study conducted by WestEd from September 2022 to April 2023 validated the effectiveness of our platform in achieving this goal. We are thrilled with the study's findings, as they highlight the positive impact of Prisms on student engagement and algebra proficiencies in classrooms.

Our approach centers on real-world applications of mathematics, harnessing the power of virtual reality to immerse students in practical contexts. By delving into current issues -- rising sea levels in coastal cities, hurricane season in tropical areas, wildfires, affordable housing solution -- students can grasp the relevance and significance of mathematical concepts in our world today. As the study revealed, these immersive scenarios serve as a potent motivational tool, capturing students' interest and curiosity from the outset.

The results speak for themselves. Students who participated in the Prisms treatment condition demonstrated an increase in post-test scores compared to their counterparts in the control group. This practical improvement translates to an 11% advantage on a researcher-designed measure of exponential functions—an impressive outcome that underscores the effectiveness of our platform.

One of the key strengths of Prisms lies in how it empowers teachers to foster meaningful discussions and deeper learning in the classroom. According to teacher reports, students were better able to make connections between mathematical concepts and real-world applications, leading to more enriched classroom discussions. With tangible contextual experiences to draw from, students felt more confident in sharing their insights and perspectives, positively impacting their overall engagement with math.

As we move forward, we are energized by the study's positive outcomes and are committed to further improving and growing our platform. The feedback and insights gained from this research will be invaluable in refining our approach and developing even more impactful content and experiences for students and teachers alike. We are energized to collaborate with school districts to replicate these outcomes (and more) for all students. Together, we can reshape math education and inspire future generations to embrace the power of mathematics.
